Pro Tour Magic Origins: A Photo Essay

The best players in the world assembled in Vancouver for Pro Tour Magic Origins, the last event of the 2014-15 Premier Play season. It was an edge-of-your-seat spectacle from start to finish, with drama woven into every match. Let the unerring eye of Pro Tour Photographer Craig Gibson be your guide in this overview of the weekend's events.

Downtown Vancouver provided a breathtaking backdrop for the competition.

"Aren't you Eric Froehlich, leader of the Player of the Year Race and member of the 2015 class of the Magic Hall of Fame, alongside Willy Edel and Shota Yasooka?"

Event Staff are eager to help players get set for the tournament. Almost TOO eager.

During the Player Meeting, first-timers to the Pro Tour are welcomed with a congratulatory round of applause.

There was also a special surprise for Gerard Fabiano, competing in his fiftieth Pro Tour on his birthday.

The festivities are over all too soon, and it's down to business. First up: Booster Draft. Here we see Yuuki Ichikawa's trademark laser focus.

After three rounds, the players switch gears to Standard Constructed. Magic Origins shook up the metagame in a big way. Sometimes, the first two Demonic Pacts just aren't enough.

What? Canada's own LoadingReadyRun? You're far too silly to be here! This is a serious tournament for serious competitors!

Exactly. Like the stoic members of Team Dex Protection, who count among themselves two Hall of Famers and Pro Tour Fate Reforged Champion Antonio Del Moral León.

Everyone with a 4-4 record or better on Day One advances to play on Saturday. Again, things kicked off with a draft. Pod 1 is suitably stacked.

For those who didn't make the cut, there's still plenty of gaming to be done. Here we see Hall of Famers Gary Wise and Alan Comer schooling some young Planeswalkers on the finer points of mastery.

As the rounds go by, the storylines of the weekend coalesce in the final rush at the Top 8. Commentators Brian David-Marshall and Rich Hagon are on top of every detail.

It was a huge weekend for Team Ultra PRO who put both Patrick Cox and Matthew Sperling into the Top 8. They would also soon celebrate an achievement for another of their number.

On Sunday, it's standing (or sitting-on-skateboard) room only to watch the live broadcast of the Top 8.

The Top 8 flew by at a breakneck pace. When the dust settled, Sweden's Joel Larsson was victorious!

He had to wait until the end of Day Two to find out, but Team Ultra PRO's Justin Cohen is your 2014-15 Rookie of the Year!

Mike Sigrist's finals appearance edged him past Eric Froehlich to make him the Captain of the U.S. National Team, and your 2014-15 Player of the Year!

Congratulations to Joel Larsson of Team Thommo, the Pro Tour Magic Origins Champion!
