Legacy Aggro Loam

This week, Daily Decks is back to our regular schedule of showcasing top tournament decks. At Grand Prix Lille, the competitors battled the challenging Legacy Format. Selecting a deck from Magic's deep history of cards can be a puzzle, and many players gear toward playing blue cards. Brainstorm, Ponder, and Force of Will are your staples, and most Legacy players use those cards as the backbone for their decks.

I am always intrigued when players choose to play non-blue cards in Legacy, and Top 4 competitor Christoph Alsheimer did just that. In fact, Christoph played every color but blue, choosing to play a four-color Loam deck.

Aggro Loam is built around the engine of Life from the Loam and utility lands. Usually those utility lands are Wastelands and fetch lands to help you find the right colors, but also present in this list are Maze of Ith, Karakas, and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. These lands are useful in different situations—and when you are dredging three cards every turn, you are more likely to find them than if you are taking a normal draw step.

Chalice of the Void is a great card to play in any non-blue Legacy deck. With one charge counter, it shuts down so many different cards. Of course the aforementioned Brainstorm and Ponder are your big targets, but there's also Thoughtseize, Sensei's Divining Top, Preordain, Delver of Secrets, and countless others. With Mox Diamond, a Chalice for one can be cast on as early as the first turn.

Aggro Loam is just full of value. Green Sun's Zenith can help you find your various one-of hate cards, such as Gaddock Teeg or Scavenging Ooze. Liliana of the Veil is a great card against the most popular deck of the tournament, Miracles, and the combo of Punishing Fire and Grove of the Burnwillows can stop any deck with small creatures like Elves or Goblins. Aggro Loam has always been a fun deck to play, and it's pretty exciting to see it in the Top 8 of a Grand Prix.
