Standard Black-Green Warriors

Today’s deck is a bit out of the ordinary. When I think of Warriors in Standard, black and white come to mind immediately. Dozoria took a different approach to Warriors on Magic Online, taking this Black-Green list to a 4-0 finish in a Daily event.

One of the first Standard decks I built for our FFL team (Future Future League, our internal Standard league) was Black-White Warriors. The card in the deck that I was most excited to try out was Blood-Chin Fanatic. This card seemed perfect to me. It was a 3/3 for three, which made it a reasonable attacker, and you could sacrifice your creatures to finish off your opponent. The card seemed great! The Warriors deck was a decent deck, but it really hasn’t caught on in real-world Standard.

One really cool interaction in this deck is between Den Protector and Nighthowler. This deck plays cards that help fill up your graveyard, such as Satyr Wayfinder and Commune with the Gods. Nighthowler bestowed on a creature can turn any of your creatures into a gigantic threat, but it can still be blocked. Den Protector has a unique blocking restriction in that creatures with power less than it can’t block it. This means that the bigger Den Protector is, the harder it is to block. If the game goes very long and you have a full graveyard, Nighthowler bestowed on a Den Protector can be game over for your opponent.

Den Protector is also a Warrior, which means that you can sacrifice it to your Blood-Chin Fanatic. If for some reason your Den Protector wasn’t big enough to kill your opponent, the life loss from Blood-Chin Fanatic will surely do the job.

Palace Siege plays an interesting role in this deck. Your primary win condition is with Den Protector and Nighthowler; with Palace Siege naming Khans, you can get back pieces that have been milled or were destroyed by your opponent’s removal. Naming Dragons doesn’t offer you card advantage the way Khans does, but it does provide you with a quick clock that will surely finish your opponent off if the game goes long.
