Naya Heroic

The deck I'd like to talk about today is a little different from most Standard decks we've seen so far. When you hear the word "heroic" you might think of white-blue or Bant. You might also associate heroic with scrying and card draw. Today's deck is a different take on heroic. While most of the creatures and enablers are the same, this deck plays something a little different.

Heroic decks are all about going all-in on one creature. You get a creature to cast onto the battlefield, pump it up with Ordeals and other effects, and protect it with Gods Willing and counterspells. This deck does all that but takes it one step further. Instead of playing Auras that giving you value like Aqueous Form and Ordeal of Thassa, this deck really goes all-in with Become Immense and Temur Battle Rage.

It's pretty easy to fill up your graveyard to fuel delve, so casting a Become Immense for only one mana is pretty easy. Temur Battle Rage grants double strike, effectively doubling your creature's power and toughness, and even gives trample to ensure a lethal attack. This two-card combo has been seeing fringe play in Modern, and I'm not surprised it's making an appearance in Standard as well.

How do you find your combo? By casting Warriors' Lesson of course! Casting a Warriors' Lesson at the right time can draw you two cards and help you find your other combo pieces. This card is especially cool with double strike because it allows you to draw an additional card as your creature will deal combat damage twice.

This is a really cool take on a heroic strategy and, while going all-in on a creature is a little dangerous, the payoff is huge. Here's the list that James Wray piloted to a 9-0 finish on Day One at Grand Prix Toronto.
